CAT CONVERTED: The Garage Cat Who Found a Home

If you have visited our reception at B J Miles anytime this year, you may have met our new addition to the team. He’s cuter and fluffier than the rest of us, and though he puts in the hours, he doesn’t get much work done.

Rascal’s story is a sad one. Abandoned at a roadside with his brother, Milo, and sister, Tiger Lily, at two weeks old, he was rescued by the neighbouring garage last summer. The kittens thrived, despite their difficult start in life, and once they were old enough, began to explore the yard. They found their way into our office, and we were completely smitten.

As the weather turned colder, the kittens liked hanging out in our reception, where it was warm and cosy. We welcomed them, as staff and customers alike seemed to love their presence. Sadly, just before Christmas, Tiger perished on Crayford Road. We were devasted and, as the neighbouring garage were spending the holidays abroad, we took the two remaining boys home for the Christmas break.

In February, Milo went missing from next door. We hope someone took him in and gave him a good home. With only Rascal left–who was both the tiniest and toughest of the litter–it seemed obvious that his current circumstances were not ideal or safe, and we desperately wanted to take him on as our pet. The situation came to a head when he was injured overnight in next door’s workshop. The poor little guy was in a bad way, so we rushed him to the vet, and took immediate ownership of him. It seems a heavy object had fallen on him and broke his leg, jaw, and canine tooth.

Rascal was operated on and we were told to keep him caged for four to six weeks to prevent him from walking, so his leg could heal. None of us were happy about this awful situation, but thankfully he bounced back incredibly quickly and was allowed out of his cage in less than four weeks.

As we live on a busy road, we decided to bring Rascal into the office instead of leaving him alone, shut indoors at home all day. He loves coming to work, and if you visit, you will usually find him snoozing and sunbathing on his favourite fluffy blankie on Andrea’s desk.

We keep the reception door locked, as we don’t let Rascal outside now, so if you call in, just knock, and if we’re in, we’ll open up. If not, we’re always in the workshop, available to carry out estimates as usual.

We’re determined to give Rascal the happy life he deserves, after everything he has been through. We’d like to thank all our customers who have been so kind and generous in the days when Rascal was injured, bringing him treats and gifts. He is back to his usual, naughty self now, his injuries healed, and his avant-garde shaved fur grown back to its former glory.

Rascal would also like us to add that he is available for belly rubs anytime.
